As we have previously mentioned in previous articles, every driver begins with zero demerit points. If a driver commits an offence which carries a demerit point(s) then that driver will have demerit point(s) added to their driving record.

If a driver reaches or exceeds the maximum demerit points allowable for a driver’s licence within a 40-month period, (3 years & 4 months) then that person’s driver licence will be suspended (or not renewed).

The ‘Demerit Point check’ feature on the Service NSW App displays the demerit point(s) a driver has accrued over the last 3 years and 4-month period.

So, what’s new?

Did you know that Service NSW on behalf of Transport for NSW (TFNSW) made a huge announcement on 6th February 2025 by stating that if a person drives safely and does NOT accrue any more demerit points over the next 12 months in the state of NSW, then that person could get one demerit point removed from their driving record.

To be eligible for this the driver must satisfy the following:

1.     Not have an expired driver licence for a period of 6 months or more.

2.     Have an offence free driving record from 17th January 2025 until 31st January 2026.

3.     Not have had your licence suspended for more than 3 months due to fine defaults.
